True to form, I managed to keep this updated daily for about 30 days, then went on vacation and never quite picked it up again.
Mainly because I’m lazy, and also there was CSI and The Shield to watch.
I have my priorities.
If I get interrupted in a routine, it’s really hard for me to re-rail myself and get back on the track, so now, with 6 weeks until I go on leave again, and with yet another shift in environment upon me, I’m going to update this thing at least this once before time catches up to me again.
Been a bit of a rough couple of days for the company I work for, but really not because of anything we’re doing here.
We have a sister program here that lost some of its personnel in a plane crash yesterday. They’re not 100% that everyone on board died, but it was in a mountainous area of northern Afghanistan, and generally speaking, not the most survivable place in the world even if you don’t end up driving your plane into a mountainside.
I didn’t know anyone on board, but it still tweaks one a little bit to realize that people do still die here, even if it was most likely just due to pilot error and not any kind of insurgent activity.
There was a suicide bomber that struck the city today, killing, at last report, 20 people.
I’m still pondering if it’s really just suicide if you plan on killing other people in the first place, but until “homicide bomber” catches on in the media, I’ll deal.
It’s almost like someone doesn’t want us here, y’all.
If you’ve been paying attention to the news out of this place at all, tensions continue to mount between the Afghan government and the international community, which, for us, means reduced alcohol accessibility and increased regulations around our documentation for being in this country.
Magical, really.
Ah well, some day I’ll be able to look back and tell someone that I was a part of all this, regardless of outcomes.
